Sports News – District Athletics Championships 2012

On Friday 29th July 2012 over 80 students from the school competed in the re-arranged Watford District Athletics championships at the Woodside Stadium in Garston. The Opening Ceremony saw all competitors do a parade lap around the track and this set the scene for an excellent days athletics. It proved to be one of the best championships the school has had for a number of years with some excellent individual performances and the Boys teams finishing joint 1st overall in the District B league with the Girls teams finishing a very respectable 3rd. Monday 2nd July saw Bushey Meads students visit Queen’s school for a  Tri-Sport Talent Idenification Day, aimed at identifying potential paralympic   talent.

The report below has   been written by year 11 students Jack Benton and Nirav Shah:

When we arrived, we signed in and were split into 2 groups and told the day was   designed for students with disabilities with the intention of finding new   talents.

Firstly we took part in some football skills on the power league pitches. We   completed skills like goal scoring, passing, defending and dribbling. We   played a match after the football skills, I really enjoyed playing the game,   it was fun and we got to play on what felt like a proper pitch.

Then   we went in the gym and played table tennis. First, we were all given a bat and ball, and individually kept score of how many keepy-uppies we could do.   We learnt how to hold the bat properly, for example, we were taught backhand   and fore hand. We also learnt how to serve the ball the correct way and how   to score.

The final session was wheelchair basketball. I enjoyed this because I have played  wheelchair basketball before.

Overall, it was a really good day; luckily it didn’t rain while we were outside playing football!

Hopefully we’ll be able to go back and do it all again soon as it was enjoyed by  everyone and we learnt some new skills.
